Summary
skillSYMS organises itself into spines — groups of related modules — and shows you the ones your role needs. NavigationOS lets you adjust that: reorder the spines you use most, hide the ones you never open, and move between organisations if you belong to more than one.
One rule governs all of it, and knowing it saves confusion: personalisation can hide and reorder, never reveal. You cannot give yourself access to something by rearranging a menu. What you see is set by your role and your provider’s enabled modules; what you personalise is the arrangement of that.
Who This Guide Is For
Everybody, but especially people whose menu feels too long.
Step 1: Open the Launcher
Click the ▦ launcher in the navigation bar.
The launcher shows every spine available to you with the modules inside it. It is the fastest way to reach something you use rarely, and it is worth opening once just to see what is there — most people are unaware of two or three spines they have access to.
Step 2: Reorder and Hide
Navigate to Settings → Navigation.
Put the spines you use daily at the top. Hide what you genuinely never use.
Hiding is reversible and personal: it affects your menu, not your colleagues’. If something disappears and you did not hide it, it was a role or module change, not a personalisation.
Step 3: Use Templates for a Role
Navigate to Settings → Navigation → Templates.
An administrator can define a starting arrangement for a role, so a new facilitator’s first login is already sensible rather than exhaustive. People can still personalise from there.
This is worth doing before onboarding a group of staff. First impressions of a large platform are formed by the menu.
Step 4: Set Your Preferences
Navigate to My Profile → Preferences for how the platform contacts you and how your home view is laid out.
Step 5: Switch Organisations
If you belong to more than one provider or employer, the workspace switcher moves you between them without signing out. Check which workspace you are in before doing anything consequential — the switcher is deliberately unobtrusive, and it is possible to enrol a learner at the wrong provider.
What Good Looks Like
- Your daily spines are the first ones in the list
- New staff get a role template rather than the full menu
- You know which workspace you are in
Common Mistakes
- Assuming a hidden module is a lost permission. Check Settings → Navigation first.
- Trying to reveal a module by personalising. Personalisation cannot grant access.
- Working in the wrong workspace.
