We build the system of record for South African skills development

skillSYMS is built in Pretoria for the providers, colleges and employers who carry South Africa’s occupational qualifications — and for the specific, unglamorous obligations that come with them.

What we actually do

A South African training provider is measured on whether it can produce evidence. Not on whether it taught well — on whether, when a site visit arrives, it can show which learner did what, who assessed it, who moderated the assessment, which supervisor verified the workplace hours, and where every file came from.

Most providers can eventually assemble that. It takes weeks, several spreadsheets, and a person who remembers how the filing works. skillSYMS exists so it takes an afternoon, because all of it was recorded as it happened rather than reconstructed afterwards.

Today that runs to 34 modules in production — learners, evidence, assessment and moderation, workplace logbooks, library, quality management, credentials with public verification, statutory exports, finance, HR and payroll — sharing one learner record so they cannot disagree with each other.

How we build

Evidence beats assertion

A compliance system earns its keep when a claim can be traced to something that actually happened — a verified workplace hour, a signed-off assessment, a file with a provenance chain. Anything a provider can only assert is a finding waiting to happen.

Built for South African rules, not adapted to them

QCTO01 through QCTO06, SETMIS, NLRD, EDLES, HEMIS, NSFAS, ICASS, POPIA, ECTA. These are not a localisation layer over an American LMS. They are the reason the product exists.

Say what is not built

Our own module catalogue requires every entry to name the migration or API that proves it ships, and our landing pages carry a section listing what they do not do. We would rather lose a deal on the website than lose it in month three.

Learner data stays where it belongs

SA ID numbers are encrypted at rest, hashed for lookup and masked on display. Originality checking runs inside your tenant rather than uploading learner work to a foreign corpus. These are choices, and they cost us features other vendors advertise.
