De-escalation — Calming a Tense Situation Before It Turns Violent
Winning is the wrong goal
A Grade 11 learner refuses to hand over his phone. The class goes silent and watches. It feels like a test of your authority, and the pull is to win it.
That pull is the danger. A learner cornered in front of peers can only lose face or push back harder. De-escalation offers a third way out. 🕊️

Run a safety session for your colleagues that people actually speak up in — preparation, ground rules with honest limits on confidentiality, handling distress, and managing a staffroom's power dynamics.
Understand hotspot mapping as a safety method — how place, time, people and supervision gaps combine into a risk pattern, and how a map becomes actions with owners and review dates.
Understand what positive discipline is, how it differs from punishment, and why consistency, relationships, logical consequences and restorative conversations make a school safer.
Understand what stress and threat do to the body and brain, how fight, flight and freeze show up in learners and teachers, and how a stressed adult can turn a small incident into a dangerous one.
What a South African teacher is actually responsible for when it comes to safety — duty of care, the SACE Code of Professional Ethics, the school code of conduct, no corporal punishment, reporting abuse and keeping records.
